Satellites Satellites Satellites

(orbiting you and me...)
We're in interview mode here at Hyperbole, Outrunners, Damn Arms and now one of the best bands in Australia, Cut Copy. Everyone knows Cut Copy. And they love Cut Copy. So read my interview with Tim Hooey from the Cutters. Sah-weet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D: I know I like many others have been wondering what exactly has been going on with you guys? It’s been a quiet couple of years and we’ve all been starved and deprived of the Cutters.

T: Yeah I know what you mean. It was kind of tough for us because Bright Like Neon Love had a delayed release in America and Europe so up until something like July last year we were still touring on that record. We only just started writing again around that time then. We managed to get the demos together pretty quickly and send them to Modular and started to talk about people we’d like to work with and Tim Goldsworthy came up. He really liked the demos, which was great but he had schedule conflicts and we couldn’t get over there until early this year. And then there were delays in mixing and stuff like that. When you’re working on other peoples’ timetables it can be really frustrating. But it’s in the can now and we’re just waiting on release schedule for next year. We’re kind of in limbo because we can’t do too much except wait.

D: From the statements about the recording which I’ve read and the songs which you’ve been playing off of it, it just sounds so much fuller and more accomplished than the last record. That’s not to say that BLNL was bad or lo-fi at all, but this just sounds like it’s a completely different level.

T: Yeah, see it’s very important for us that we didn’t want to be associated with the trends that are going through at the moment. We wrote all these songs which distance themselves from what’s going on at the moment, especially in dance music. I think a lot of people will be shocked to hear the record as it doesn’t have a lot of dance songs on it. We were listening to lots of different things like ELO, Animal Collective and The Sleepy Jackson, and we wrote more stuff that was shoegazer and folky because we don’t want to get caught up in a trend. We wanted to grow and move forward musically.

D: That’s really interesting to hear because I’ve been noticing that a lot of bands, especially Australian bands, have been trying to do some really interesting stuff. Like Dystopia absolutely blew my preconceptions away and I’ve been talking to bands like Dardanelles and Lost Valentinos and they’re sort of distancing themselves from that scene which you guys helped to foster a few years ago. That’s the kind of thing I hear in a Cut Copy song. It’s important; it’s got staying power. You can listen to it again and again.

T: That sort of thing is really important to us. We’re not interested in writing a hit single or just making a compilation of twelve inches as an album or being pop stars or being labelled as this “cool” band. I think that’s what we’re doing this album too. It’s a big “fuck you” to those people who think that we are. We only want to make records that are interesting to us.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The band just wrapped up a mini-tour for the So Haunted single and we managed to finagle tickets to their show at the Metro. Might I just say, holy fuckness, their new material sounds fantastic! Tracks like Lights & Music and Far Away were brilliant on first listen, and older jams like Saturdays and Bright Neon Payphone were still terrific. The dudes brought along club-thug superstar, Knightlife, and Damn Arms (who snuck me and my girlf backstage and gave us beer!), so needless to say, it was a great show.

Whilst we all wait (with baited breath) for what should be one of the best records of 2008, Cutters' In Ghost Colours, here's an extra dose of Cut Copy goodness; there's some old stuff (from the I Thought Of Numbers EP and their Love Of Diagrams remix), Digitalism rocking out on Going Nowhere and in case someone was living in a spider hole for the last two months, So Haunted.
